I have often sat on the deck at the beach house on Dauphin Island and watched approaching storms. If the forecast is for severe conditions, a person ought to take the necessary precautions to secure outside furniture and lower the storm shutters. I follow the old adage to “batten down the hatches” as the storm approaches. I have not been on the island during a hurricane and hope I never am. There are some people who may know full well that a powerful hurricane is approaching and simply ignore evacuation orders. They put their lives at risk and may even endanger the lives of family, police, and other who are seeking to protect them.
The same is true in the spiritual world. Gathering clouds of judgment appear on the horizons of our lives. “The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it” (Proverbs 22:3, ESV). Men are often able to read the physical signs of an approaching storm, but seem unable or unwilling to see the imminent Day of Judgment looming on the horizon. “He (Jesus) answered them, ‘When it is evening, you say, “It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.” And in the morning, “It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.” You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times’” (Matthew 16:2-3, ESV).
Everyone will face this spiritual storm. The book of Hebrews speaks of the certainty of both death and judgment. “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27, NKJ). There is coming a day when we all shall see the Lord coming in the clouds. “And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and glory” (Luke 21:27). At that time the scripture indicates the following will happen: “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds” ( Jeremiah 17:10, ESV).
John writes of the approaching storm in Revelation 22:12-15 (NKJ): “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”
There is an approaching storm! The words of an old gospel song by Will Thompson have echoed across the decades. “There’s a great day coming, a great day coming; There’s a great day coming by and by, when the saints and the sinners shall be parted right and left. Are you ready for that day to come? Are you ready for the judgment day? ”
Jesus said, “Remember Lot’s wife” (Luke 17:32). She saw the gathering storm, but delayed her escape and was lost!
