Sitting on the deck of a beach house on Dauphin Island, I gazed over the Gulf of Mexico. There stretched before me what seemed an endless expanse of water. I watched gulls fly toward the horizon until they could no longer be seen. The vastness of God’s creation always captivates me. He created the earth, the heavens, the stars, and the great endless beyond. Psalm 24:1-2: “The earth is the Lord’s and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein. For He founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the waters.”
The truth of a recent “Pickles” cartoon came to mind. Since I believe all truth is God’s truth, I want to share a real gem from the cartoon. It beautifully aligns with the Word of God. In the cartoon (10/9/14), Brian Crane penned the words, “A fish swims in the ocean, and no matter how far it swims, there is no end to the water. A bird flies in the sky, and no matter how far it flies, there is no end to the air”. The same principles prevail in the spiritual world. There is no end to God’s Mercy. There is no end to God’s Grace. There is no end to God’s Love. Scripture verifies these principles.
Psalm 57:10 (NKJV): “For Your mercy reaches unto the heaven, and Your truth unto the clouds.”
Psalm 136:1 (KJV): “For His mercy endures forever.” (The phrase is repeated 26 times in this Psalm.)
1 Timothy 1:14 (NKJV): “And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.”
2 Corinthians 9:8 (NKJV): “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.”
John 3:16 (NKJV): “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Romans 8:38: “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
The words of an old hymn written by Frederick W. Faber, “There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy”, echo in my heart:
There’s wideness in God’s mercy, like the wideness of the sea;
There’s a kindness in His justice which is more than liberty.
There is welcome for the sinner, and more graces for the good;
There is mercy with the Savior; There is healing in His blood.
For the love of God is broader, than the measure of man’s mind;
And the heart of the eternal is most wonderfully kind.
