Identity Theft

identity-theftThe month of January brought a tempest into our lives. A month later, we are still trying to recover. We experienced a major computer hack/identity theft. The experience has left us with a deep sense of being violated and our lives invaded. As we moved to repair the damage and protect ourselves, the hours stretched into days and the days into weeks. We had to cancel bank accounts, credit cards and other financial accounts. Visits in person were necessary to Social Security Office, Internal Revenue Service, Teacher Retirement, State Revenue Cabinet, and more. Our computers and iPhones had to be shut down and ‘cleaned’.

As we trudged through a nearly endless maze of complications, a thought came to me. Although the problem of identity theft seems relatively new, it is as old as man’s first days on earth. Genesis 3 recounts the story of the day that Satan stole Adam and Eve’s true identify. Before the incursion, they were without sin and children of God. Afterwards, they were left violated, disillusioned, and the image of God in them had been defaced. The Father’s likeness was blurred. They were no longer unstained children of God, but their identity was changed to children of disobedience. They were sinners.

From that day to this, God has been working to restore His image in humankind. His desire is to return people to His likeness and image. He wants to give back to us our true identity, that of being ‘children of God’. He sent His son to take on the sins of our fallen race in order that we might have our true identity restored.

  • But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12)
  • “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith(Galatians 3:26)

Matthew Henry, in his classic commentary, speaks of believers when he states, “Having accepted Christ Jesus as their Lord and Savior, and relying on him alone for justification and salvation, they become the sons of God”.

Are you a victim of Identity Theft? Has God’s image in you been defiled? Do you desire to recover your true identity through Jesus Christ? Confess your sins, believe in His name, receive Him into your heart and your true Identity will be restored.
